Parish Notes, 28th June 2009 |
Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Introduction: The healings in today’s gospel reveal Jesus as a generous, kind and compassionate person who wills that men should live life fully. The gospel describes two of our Lord's miracles, the healing of a chronic disease and the revival of a young girl who was dead. They also give us further proof of the divine power and the infinite mercy of our Savior. In the second reading St Paul asks the Corinthian Christian community to show the same kindness and compassion to their Jewish brothers and sisters by raising a fund for them. The first reading suggests that such acts of loving-kindness will help us to share the eternal life God has prepared for us. The goal of our lives is to know, to love and to serve God here, and to share God’s life forever.
Exchange : No enquiries last week ! This is a gentle reminder. A young Italian girl who seeks to improve her English has contacted the parish looking to spend a month with an Irish Catholic family this summer. There will also be an opportunity for a young person to travel to Pescara near the Adriatic Sea in exchange. Anybody interested ?? Please contact the parish office Tel. 6638604.
Sermons. The priest gave an unusually long sermon on prayer that Sunday. Later at the door, while the priest was shaking hands with his parishioners, one man said: “Father, your sermon was simply wonderful- -so invigorating, inspiring and refreshing.” The priest, of course, broke out in a big smile only to hear with a shock the man say, “I felt like a new man when I woke up!”
Lough Derg There will be a One Day Retreat to Lough Derg on Saturday 22nd August. For more details see Notice in the Church Porch.
Stained Glass Restoration Fund: The monthly collection for the Stained Glass fund takes place after all the Masses next weekend.
Christian Meditation A number of parishioners have expressed interest in starting a Christian Meditation group. This Wednesday (1st July) at 8pm there will be an information evening in the Parish Pastoral Centre, where Fergal McLoughlin from the World Community for Christian Meditation (WCCM) will give an introduction to meditative prayer in the tradition of the Benedictine monk, John Main. John Main believed that the practice of pure prayer, or Christian meditation, is the birthright of all believers, not just for those in monasteries and convents. In 1975, he began the first weekly meditation groups at his monastery in London and then in Montreal. Now hundreds of weekly meditation groups around the world carry on the tradition.
