Parish Notes, 7th March 2010
Third Sunday of Lent

Please support the Stained Glass Fund this Sunday.

Scripture: The role of Moses prefigures the role of Jesus. Through Moses God saved his people Israel from slavery in Egypt. We are the new people of God saved through the waters of Baptism from the slavery of sin and we are en route to the promised land of eternal life. We too are fed with food 'from heaven', namely the Eucharist.

Credit where credit is due: to say that the Church has done nothing and learnt nothing since the early 1990's, is simply unfair. Three bishops have resigned and three others have offered their resignation. Hundreds of millions both in cash and property have been paid out by bishops and religious orders. A robust child protection system is now in place in all dioceses. The former Clinical Director of the victims' helpine (Faoiseamh) was none other than the one time head of 'One in Four' and the head of the national child protection office in Maynooth, is a Northern Presbyterian who forced the resignation of Bishop John Magee in Cloyne. In this sense the Church's system is much more robust than that of the State. No social worker for example, has ever had to resign because of a failure to protect children. 20 minors died in the care of the HSE over the past 10 years. Not a single social worker has been named or resigned in the full glare of publicity. It's obvious that the Church needs to do a far better job explaining to the public what it has done. Otherwise the public will go on believing it has done nothing !
(These facts (which are not that well known), have been gleaned from an article by David Quinn)

Has anybody got better ?? A minister parked his car in a no-parking zone in a large city because he was short of time and couldn't find a space with a meter. Then he put a note under the windshield wiper that read: "I have circled the block 10 times. If I don't park here, I'll miss my appointment. Forgive us our trespasses." When he returned, he found a citation from a police officer along with this note. "I've circled this block for 10 years. If I don't give you a ticket, I'll lose my job. Lead us not into temptation."
